In the Savage Land, Longshot is hunting a pterosaur. He kills it, and finds a woman watching him. She introduces herself as Wanda Lensherr Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. She’s been sent to take Longshot into custody. He throws a handful of knives at her, which she deflects, dodges, or catches. Longshot is stunned; the odds have always worked in his favor before. However, Wanda’s ability is the manipulation of probabilities, and her power outweighs his. She turns him into a cat, then contact General Fury to report that her mission has been successful. Longshot won’t be going back to Genosha, however. Fury is sending him to a holding cell in the Triskelion.

In Chicago, Alex Summers argues with Emma Frost about turning Lorna over to SHIELD. Emma tells him that if she hadn’t let them take Lorna, they would have arrested all of the students and closed the school. She assures him that Fury will treat Lorna fairly and that she has good people looking after her.
When Lorna wakes up, she’s stunned to find that she’s sharing a cell with Magneto. She’s frightened; he’s impressed, saying she must have very strong powers if she’s locked up with him. He offers her a hand up. Quicksilver is watching on a remote camera, and threatens to break Magneto’s neck if he harms Lorna. Magneto asks if Lorna plays chess, and offers to teach her the rules.
Charles Xavier delivers the news of Lorna’s cellmate to Emma, who claims that she was wrong to let her students out into the non-mutant world. Xavier cautions her not to tell anyone about Lorna’s cellmate.
Alex and several other students are watching the conference on a dorm-room television; one of them had hacked into the cable box so the TV could be used for teleconferencing. Alex is all set to go rescue Lorna, and recruits several others, including Northstar, Cannonball, and Roberto. Another student offers to start looking for a way to legally get Lorna freed.
In the Triskelion, Magneto muses about different philosophies: shades of gray vs. seeing the world in black and white, or, as he tells Lorna, in positives and negatives. He calls her Polaris.
Xavier reveals Lorna’s predicament to his students. He adds that Alex has stolen a vehicle and his heading to the Triskelion for an attempted rescue. Scott reveals that Lorna is his ex-girlfriend. Xavier orders him to take Storm, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Shadowcat to find Alex and his party. Iceman, Marvel Girl and Colossus are to form a perimeter around the Triskelion as a second line of defense. Angel and Dazzler are told to remain behind.
In Chicago, two men are placing a machine into the back of a van. They’ve used it to manipulate magnetic fields and frame Lorna. They’re stopped by a police officer; one man kills her and takes her uniform, transforming himself into her exact likeness. She comments that having a high human body count on a mission is Magneto’s calling card, and adds that it enhances his “mystique”.
