Having spent the night together, Logan has told Jean of his mission to murder Xavier in the name of Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants. His reasoning for confessing being that he had converted to Xavier's dream for peace between humans and mutants. Enraged, Jean threw Logan out of bed and was ready to attack him. Luckily for Logan she was interrupted by a psychic warning directed towards every person in Washington D.C.: Magneto is approaching with a fleet of Sentinels and intends to attack the city in retalliation for the attack America made on Magneto's mutant haven the Savage Land.

In the Savage Land, still reeling from the Sentinel attack, Cyclops is preparing to board the Blackbird and return home to help the X-Men save Washington. The Scarlet Witch informs him that he'll never make it on time. But Cyclops points out that Quicksilver is fast enough, and it's time he stand up to his father once and for all.

Back in Washington, the Sentinels have arrived, and under Magneto's control, they work to eliminate every human in sight. While Colossus and Beast work crowd control, Iceman and Storm are supporting the Air Force. Storm, while hiding in the Lincoln Monument, uses her newly developed ball lightning attack to take out Sentinel after Sentinel from long range. Despite being told to stay out of the fight, Wolverine makes a bee-line for Magneto, who has already brought the President to his knees, in the nude, in front of TV cameras on the White House lawn. Announcing the end of humanity's rule over Earth, Magneto attempts to crush the President with his own limousine. Using his telekinetic abilities, Xavier is able to divert the limousine, saving the President. Magneto dismantles Xavier's wheelchair and prepares to execute Charles in front of the world, but not before Wolverine thrusts his claws into Magneto's back, halting the attack. Magneto is shocked, and Wolverine reveals his change of heart. Wolverine takes another swipe and Magneto's chest, only to find a steel pole sent into his back, taking him out of the fight.

Poised on the threshold of world domination, Magneto sets off a magnetic pulse that overrides the controls of every nuclear weapon in the world. At that moment, Quicksilver arrives and removes his father's helmet, the only thing blocking Xavier's mental abilities from affecting him. With that, Xavier takes control of Magneto's powers, and collects all the Sentinel parts strewn across the city. Turning Magneto into a supermagnet, he detonates it, ending the threat of Magneto for good.

Later on at the mansion, Cyclops has rejoined the school, and is ready to resume leadership, despite having abandoned the team after Beast's injury. Wolverine has been allowed to stay, although he is leaving on a journey to discover his past in the morning. Having eliminated Magneto and gained the trust of humanity, Xavier tells Cyclops that it's time to begin phase two of his plan.
