A young boy stands at the edge of a high school roof. His name is Jean Paul Beaubier, and he has just been kicked off the track team under suspicion of steroid use. Suddenly, Nightcrawler teleports next to him, startling him into falling off the edge. Warren swoops down, catching Jean Paul and placing him on the roof. Kurt and Warren introduce themselves as X-men; they are there with an invitation for Jean Paul to come to Xavier’s school. Jean Paul is taken aback by this, not knowing before that he was a mutant. This is too much for him to handle, having recently discovered he is gay as well. He harshly declines the offer and races off into the city using his super speed.

At the X-mansion, Wolverine and Colossus test each others limits in the Danger Room. In the observation deck above, Emma Frost criticizes the Professor’s new teaching and training techniques; unable to deal with this, she announces she will be leaving the mansion with whichever students want to go with her. Alex Summers is the only one to take her up on her offer.

Meanwhile, the other X-men cope with Beast’s recent death. Jean and Scott take a stroll in one of his mind’s memories, specifically his childhood fantasy world, called Corsair. Bobby and Rogue go ice skating on the pool, much to the chagrin of Kitty. With Dazzler away at a rave, Shadowcat goes to hang out with Storm, but upon finding her gets quite the shock. Unable to deal with her grief over the loss of Hank, Storm has given herself an extreme haircut, short and wild.

In the city, Jean Paul is cornered in an alley by a muscled, tattooed thug named Mister Sinister. Sinister produces a gun, aims it, and takes a shot at Jean Paul…
