Reeling from Storm's news at the end of last issue, Cyclops and Iceman are backed against a wall, under fire from the Croatian army. Cyclops takes a bullet in the chest and goes down, causing Iceman to lose his cool. Luckily, Cyclops' kevlar vest shields him from the bullet and, Using his position beneath a truck, Scott blasts the enemy vehicle, and the two make their way to help Storm and Colossus who are busy trying to free Beast's body from the rubble that had trapped his body. The team remains under attack from the Croates, and help arrives in the form of Magneto and his Brotherhood. Magneto drops a train on the Croatian military and helps remove the rubble covering Beast, who is found to be alive, but gravely injured. Though the X-Men are terrified of Magneto, he chides them for risking their lives for a dream that can never exist. Pitying them, as well as not wanting to risk Wolverine's mission, Magneto allows them to return home to tend to Beast.

Back at the mansion, the team observes as Jean and Charles use an experimental surgery procedure involving reading the mind of top research doctors and scientists in order to learn a ground breaking procedure involving transplanting animal organs into a human body. The others express their guilt as Scott informs them that he attempted to phone Hank's mother, but that she wouldn't take the call.

After the surgery, Jean and Logan go for a walk in the garden. After a brief discussion Logan kisses Jean as Scott watches through a window from the second floor of the mansion. Angry, Scott packs his bags and enters the war room, where Xavier is conferencing with US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice regarding a visit to the White House. As their conference ends, Scott informs Xavier that he will be leaving the mansion. Scott feels the tingle of Xavier telepathically releasing calming hormones into his bloodstream, and assumes Charles is trying to get him to stay. With that, Cyclops storms out of the mansion. As he leaves, a call comes from the medilab. Hank has woken from his surgery to a big surprise. His hair has turned blue.

Having stolen the Blackbird, Scott arrives in Antarctica and lands in the Savage Land. He is greeted with open arms into The Brotherhood by Magneto.
