Jean lies disoriented on the ground; in the distance lies the smoldering remains of the helicopter she took down moments before. The X-men arrive to her aid, and Nightcrawler teleports the horrified Jean to the X-mansion. Wolverine figures out where Tara is hiding, and he and the X-men go to confront her.

At Tara’s base, she talks to her mysterious superior via a computer. He orders the mission to kill Wolverine halted. Tara is outraged at this turn of events.

Suddenly, the X-men burst into the compound. Tara shoots her own men, then defiantly puts the gun to her own head and pulls the trigger. Wolverine howls out in frustration; his hopes of getting answers having been dashed.

S.H.I.E.L.D. helicopters appear in the sky. Commander Dugan orders the X-men to stand down; he is angry at the haphazard way the X-men stormed into the compound, considering they were ordered to back off from Tara in the first place. He addresses Wolverine by the name James, hinting that he knew Logan back during his Weapon X days. Dugan explains that the hunt for Wolverine was probably the first attempt to sabotage the President’s credibility, and that the orders to take down Wolverine had to have come from some traitorous government official.

Back at the X-mansion, Cyclops interrupts Jean’s discussion with an unseen participant. She shrugs off Cyclops’ questions as to who she was talking to. Down in the garden, Wolverine sits and contemplates what has occurred.
