Jean Grey has arrived in Miami, Florida, and proceeds to neutralize the nuclear war head detonated by Magneto. Terrified by the Phoenix manifestations Jean is displaying, Charles warns Nightcrawler and Rogue to keep away, unsure as to whether Jean is in control. Jean reassures the professor that she is perfectly fine. Meanwhile, a crowd of humans has begun to gather, and the mutants prepare for an attack. Instead, they are surprised to be praised by the humans, who are grateful to still be alive.

In the North Pole, Wolverine and Cyclops square off. Warning the others not to get involved, Wolverine declares that he deserves every bit of punishment he is about to receive. Rather than draw out a long fight, Cyclops blasts Wolverine and leaves him smoking. As he walks away, Cyclops tells Wolverine that he is off the team.

News spreads across the world that the X-Men have saved the world and handed Magneto to the U.S. Government. The team appears on magazine covers and news interviews. In the White House, General Nick Fury, Tony Stark, meet with the President and his cabinet to discuss the political ramifications of the X-Men's actions. Claiming that the X-Men have redrawn the political map, Stark proposes incorporating the Xavier Institute and the X-Men into the Federal budget, effectively keeping them under S.H.I.E.L.D. jurisdiction and observation. This allowing the U.S. Government to influence school policy and course syllabus, and hand pick their own S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from the student population.

Three months later the Xavier Institute is hosting its grand reopening party, whose guests include the Ultimates, Rogue's parents, Moira MacTaggert, and Professor Braddock, who arrives with surprising news. The consciousness of his daughter was not lost when Colossus was forced to kill her. Instead, she transplanted it into the body of a Japanese girl who was in a coma.

Surprisingly enough two of the attendees were Mr. and Mrs. McCoy, fresh out of plastic surgery, using money from a book they had written about raising a mutant superhero. The two apologized for running Hank out of their home, and professed that they had left their bigoted mindsets behind, opting for new liberal and open-minded beliefs. This gave Hank the perfect opportunity to introduce his African-American girlfriend, Storm, to the two.

After the party, General Fury and Xavier discuss their newly formed agreement. While Fury insists that the government doesn't plan to get involved with the school, Xavier alludes to the fact that he may have planned the entire situation from the beginning.
