A ball of fire erupts in downtown Chicago as the Brotherhood’s escape car rushes away. The car hurtles straight for a solitary figure in the middle of the road. Crashing into him, two of the Brotherhood go flying through the windshield. The two other members try to get out of the car only to discover it’s on top of an ice pillar. Wolverine, meanwhile, takes care of the escape pilot. Storm focuses rain clouds over a couple of city blocks, putting out the fire. Leaving the scene the X-Men hope this will be their first step at salvation with mankind.

In Stanford, Connecticut a small family watches the news where the X-Men are accused of being behind the attack. On the other side of the room the X-Men also watch the news, invisible to the family thanks to Jean. Kitty then notices that Jean is crying. After being asked what is wrong Jean voices her fears that Wolverine killed Cyclops to be with her.

Camp X-Factor, Cuba. Nick Fury interrogates Xavier on where the X-Men and Magneto are. When Xavier doesn’t budge Fury reveals a captured Nightcrawler, someone whose physic defenses they can break. In Chicago twenty seconds after someone pulled a gun on Wolverine; Wolverine stands over the bodies of U.S soldiers.

Back in the X-Men’s hiding place a discussion is had over how many soldiers Wolverine hospitalized when Jean accuses Wolverine of killing Cyclops for her affections. Then out of nowhere Magneto appears. On instinct, Iceman attacks, discovering that Magneto is only a hologram. Magneto says they have nothing to fear from him he is just extending an invitation to join him. As his hologram fades Magneto informs them that they have seven days to consider his proposal.
