In New York City, a fourteen year old Kitty Pryde makes plans with her friends to secretly attend a party. When she gets home to her apartment she is surprised to learn that her mother, Theresa, is on to her plan. Kitty huffs and prepares her dinner when suddenly her plate of spaghetti slips through her hands and crashes to the floor. "Oh no," Kitty says, as she begins sinking into the floor of her kitchen. She screams as she lands in the bedroom of the people living below her apartment. She runs through the nearest wall and finds herself outside, in the middle of the street. A swerving car passes harmlessly through Kitty, and suddenly she is inside of a bus, begging for someone to hold onto her hand. Just as quickly she begins slipping through the floor again and finds herself in the underground sewer system. With a tear in her eye, Kitty pulls out her cell phone and calls her mother to pick her up. Later, back at home, Kitty is asleep on the couch as her mother reads an e-mail from a Professor Charles Xavier.

An unknown amount of time passes, and Theresa and Kitty find themselves speeding through upstate New York in the sports convertible of Jean Grey as the X-Men's Blackbird jet soars overhead. As the car arrives, the holographic projection that conceals the school fades away, and Professor Xavier arrives to talk with Theresa while Jean shows Kitty around the school. Jean gives Kitty the tour, discussing day to day occurances in the mansion as Scott and Ororo return from their flying lesson and Peter and Logan return from helping the NYPD on a drug bust. In the entertainment room, the two find Henry, who is watching a press conference featuring the politician who is backing Bobby Drake's family's negligence lawsuit against the Xavier Institute for the injuries Bobby sustained during a battle with The Ultimates.

Meanwhile, over tea in Xavier's private office, Theresa expresses her concerns regarding allowing Kitty to stude at the Institute. Theresa doesn't want Kitty participating in any missions or taking on a codename and costume. Xavier agrees, but feels that she is making a mistake, as he feels his students should be taught to defend themselves.

Outside, Colossus prepares to drive Kitty home to retrieve her things. As Jean and Xavier discuss Kitty's potential Jean is suddenly overcome by a vision of a huge firebird. As the students attempt to calm her, Jean screams that her visions have returned.
