Dispatched by Magneto to infiltrate the X-Men and assassinate Charles Xavier, the mutant known as Wolverine arrives in New York at the JFK Airport. Met by a Brotherhood of Mutants East Coast representative, the two exit the airport only to be blind sided by operatives of Col. John Wraith's Weapon X, leaving the Brotherhood liason dead and Wolverine severely injured. The unit takes Wolverine on board and begins their trip towards their Canadian base.

Meanwhile the newly gathered X-Men have been training on the mansion grounds when they are interrupted by a telepathic summons from Charles Xavier, who informs them that they are going on assignment. On hearing that they would be rescuing the internationally known killer known as Wolverine the team balks, but are reassured by Xavier. Though he'd only been with the team for a few weeks, Bobby decides to go along with the team, wanting to help another mutant in the way the X-Men had helped him.

Traveling through Syracuse, NY, the Weapon X agents on the convoy have their fun with Wolverine, who is trapped in an adamantium prison. The goons pump him full of machine gun fire and taunt him while Colonel Wraith threatens to wipe his mind clean again to bring him back under their control. Arriving just in time, the X-Men swoop down attack the convoy. Storm's highly unrefined abilities blow most of the vehicles away, leaving the rest of the team to take out the operatives and free Wolverine. Beast and Colossus are able to decode the mechanism that releases Wovlerine, who takes off on a motorcycle after the fleeing Wraith. Upon finding him, Wolverine slowly clawed Wraith's face, leaving three deep scars. Though he wanted very much to kill Wraith, Wolverine was stopped by Marvel Girl, who telekinetically threw him into a cliff, knocking him unconcious.

Back in the Savage Land, Magneto reveals to his Brotherhood that he secretly informed Weapon X of Wolverine's arrival in New York. This would not only get Xavier's attention and allow Wolverine easy access into the mansion, but also allow Magneto to turn his attention toward exacting revenge on Washington.
