On a New York City harbor, late at night, a single mother and her boyfriend are murdered by a gangster nicknamed Hammerhead, while the woman’s daughter stares in shock from the back seat of a car. Hammerhead, not wanting witnesses, shoves his head through the window and reaches for the innocent child. Thinking fast, she jumps out the opposite side of the car and runs into the darkness of the Big Apple, leaving Hammerhead jammed inside the car.
The next day, on the busy streets of Manhattan, a ruggedly handsome street urchin named Remy is seducing a woman with a card trick. “So tell me, Cheri… Is dis’ your card?” he asks as he charges the card and it explodes, leaving only a stunned audience and a heart shaped cutout flowing in the wind.
Only after he and this woman make a date, Remy is approached by the newly orphaned girl who thinks Remy is a wizard, and wants him to bring his murdered mother back to life. Not to leave the girl alone, he follows her to the crime scene and takes in the gruesome sights and learns the child’s only family is in Las Vegas and makes the only right decision, taking her to the police, but she wants to stay with him. Little do they know, Hammerhead is watching them, keeping tabs on his loose end.
After a failed attempted to steal some food, the pair make off into an alley way, were they are approached by religious recruiting men, Remy coldly turns them down and take the girl to his home, an abandoned subway train under the city. The girl reaches out to a moving subway train and Remy pulls her back, later telling her it’s wrong, she pulls away, begging him not to hurt her. After the abuse of Remy’s own childhood, he comforts the child and they hug, as two outcasts, finding each other and fall asleep.
Upon waking, Remy finds that the child is gone! There's only a note which reads “Don’t Come Looking for her. Let It Go” which he tears apart, causing them to explode in a massive outburst of rage and his hunger for revenge.
