The world is facing a new threat. Humanity is evolving. A new race of human beings are emerging: homo sapiens superior, better known as mutants. These mutants are gifted (or cursed) with incredible abilities. Their mere existance threatens to unseat humanity at the top of the food chain. America has decided to take action, and has unleashed a fleet of mutant-hunting robots known as Sentinels. These Sentinels seek out and eliminate anyone with the X-Gene. In reponse to this threat, Professor Charles Xavier, the most powerful telepath on earth, gathers a team of inexperienced young mutants to fight for homo superior and teach the world that humans and mutants can live in peace. Scott (Cyclops) Summers, Jean (Marvel Girl) Grey, Henry (Beast) McCoy, Ororo (Storm) Monroe, and Piotr (Colossus) Rasputin have been brought together to form the X-Men.
Using the psychic amplifier Cerebro, Xavier located a young mutant in New York City and sent the X-Men on their first mission. The X-Men found Bobby Drake alone and scared on a bus in downtown Manhattan. Apparently Xavier wasn't the only one who had found Bobby. Before the X-Men could offer Bobby a place by their side he was attacked by a pack of Sentinels. Cutting it close, the Beast rescued Bobby from the bus before it was crushed by one of the giant androids. Just as a decapitated Sentinel was toppling over onto a group of innocent bystanders, Bobby took action and, using his newly discovered abilities froze the robot in mid-fall, saved the crowd below. This gave the Beast a good reason to christen him "The Iceman!"
Meanwhile, the mutant terrorist leader known as Magneto has become aware of America's mutant-eliminating Sentinel program and vows to seek revenge for the mutants that have been killed. In addition, he has dispatched the mutant known as Wolverine to infiltrate Charles Xavier's new team. His goal: to assassinate Xavier, Magneto's only real obstacle in his quest for mutant dominancy.
