In Ironwater City, Thanos has taken over Ben Grimm's mind and body. Susan Storm's force fields have no effect. Dreamcatcher won't attempt a rescue; she warns the Fantastic Four not to let Thanos touch any of them. Reed claims Thanos isn't as powerful as he thinks he is, if he needs torture and fear to rule his subjects. Thanos replies that his subjects gave up their freedoms willingly. He then tells Reed that there is a device he wants Reed to build for him. The device would erase the wills of others, thereby bringing order to the empire. Reed refuses. Thanos then causes Ben to grab Johnny Storm's head and begin squeezing.
Outside the city, Seed Nineteen's soldiers notice an increasing number of soldiers, and the sudden appearance of Ronan. Instead of ordering the troops to capture the Fantastic Four, Ronan tells them to take him to the Senate building instead.
Thanos is explaining that death is the end to uncertainty and chance. As Sue and Reed attack him, Ben Grimm suddenly re-asserts himself and takes back control of his body. Dreamcatcher appears and admits to helping a little in the process. The troops outside suddenly attack, and the Fantastic Four fight back.
In what's left of the Senate House, Ronan comments that it was destroyed because it was a symbol. He then orders the area sealed off by his troops. Seed Nineteen's children have followed them to the Senate House. They are still looking for a way to free Tesseract.
As the Fantastic Four fight, Dreamcatcher gives Reed the knowledge to assemble a transport gate and the coordinates of both his planet and hers. He is to build the gate and plan an escape route, while she merges Johnny and Sue's powers to provide a devastating weapon.
The captain of the troops notes the appearance of the flaming shield that can withstand their weapons. Ronan tells him not to send in more troops -- the "universal weapon" will take care of the situation. At that moment, Reed triggers the transport gate and takes his group back to Earth. Ben Grimm is rejoicing about being back in New York, until he notices the merging of New York and Ironwater City. Dreamcatcher tells them that the transport beam has been diverted, and that only the "universal weapon" could do it.
Ronan stands before them and declares that they are all on trial, along with the rest of planet Earth.
