Susan Storm and Reed Richards are out shopping in a fashionable New York store when an explosion blows a hole in the wall and reveals a group of non-humans. They take stock of their situation – one of them is unconscious, another badly injured. Within moments, a store security guard draws a gun on them. One of the aliens, Vykni, assembles a creature from the surrounding debris to attack the guard. Reed and Sue spring to the rescue, disabling the creature.

The aliens quickly analyze the couple's abilities. The alien Dreamcatcher takes Sue out, and a second alien, Threshold, shoots Reed with bullets she "caught" when the security guard fired. As police arrive on the scene, the aliens pick up their unconscious companion and walk away in the guise of four average humans. The alien Fountain notes there's something wrong with the unconscious man, Tesseract. The group is looking for an open spot to land a songship, a form of transportation, but Threshold suddenly states that they're trapped.

Back at the contact site, Reed and Sue turn out to be fine. Sue insists on taking the aliens' vehicle to the Baxter Building to study, much to the annoyance of Lieutenant Lumpkin, who's come to pick them up. As they're loading the vehicle, Reed finds what looks like another alien artifact on the floor.

In a park not far away, Vykni forms the trees into sentinels. As Fountain works over Tesseract, Threshold and another of the group, Magnificent Brute, plan to retrieve the missing "artifact", another alien they call Seed Nineteen.

At the Baxter Building, Reed is trying to analyze the "artifact" as Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm crack jokes about the situation. They finally take the hint and leave, allowing Reed to work uninterrupted. Sue is running scans on the aliens' vehicle, which she is convinced is alive. Unfortunately, it may not live much longer.

Threshold, Fountain, Dreamcatcher and Brute make their way to the Baxter Building as Seed Nineteen makes mental contact with Reed. The aliens freeze building security, then take the elevator to the top floors. Johnny and Ben interrupt their video game to join the soldiers outside the elevator. The doors open to reveal a trio of children. As Johnny goes to shake hands with Fountain, the alien touches him, causing him to ignite beyond his ability to control his flame.
