Something has gone horribly wrong with the teleportation device; a backlash has spread out in the Nevada desert, leaving the Baxter Building scientists knocked to the ground. Reed Richards lays on his side, meekly calling out for help. Soldiers are beginning to secure the area when Dr. Storm, frantically looking for Sue and Johnny, stumbles across Reed. He is at first mistaken for some alien that may have come through the device, for Reed’s limbs appear to have stretched out to ridiculous and impossible lengths. In the background, the teleportation device explodes, and Reed faints.
Meanwhile, Ben Grimm wakes up laying on the ground, but nowhere near the Nevada test site. Locals run away from him in terror; Ben appears now to be made out of some rock-like substance. A truck rams him from behind; due to Ben’s new body composition, the truck wrecks when it hits him, flipping over his head. Ben is obviously disturbed.
Back at the Nevada site, Reed discovers that Victor tampered with important coordinates, thus in fact causing the backlash and explosion. A government official enters, saying that Ben has been found in Mexico City.
Johnny Storm wakes up in a hospital bed in France. He is obviously confused, and begins to shout for help; at this point, his body begins to smoke and ends up bursting into flames. The flames are put out by the hospital’s sprinkler system; Johnny seems fine, and makes a call to his father.
Back at the Baxter Building, Dr. Storm receives the call that Johnny is alright. He and Reed deduce that something is going on with the elements: Johnny represents fire, Reed himself is water, Ben is rock. This leaves air for Sue, whom Reed vows to find.
Sue awakens in a sewer; half of her body is invisible. She looks around to find that she is surrounded by a bunch of mud-like creatures and her old professor, Dr. Molekevic.
