Dr. Arthur Molekevic gives a lecture to his class at the Baxter Building, including pupils Reed Richards and Sue Storm. After berating the students, Molekevic storms off; all the students make fun of him, except for Victor Van Damme, who thinks Molekevic is a genius. The rest of the students are amazed that the anti-social Victor actually spoke to them.

Later, Reed sits in a separate room with his dog in front of the gigantic teleportation device he has helped develop since his first days at the Baxter Building. He’s stuck trying to crack a code when Sue surprises him; they casually flirt. Reed takes a phone call out on the roof, where to his disappointment he finds out that his parents won’t be visiting anytime soon. Upon arriving back to his room, Reed finds Victor inside, making corrections to his notes. He kicks him out, but then takes a look at the revised notes and is impressed. The next day at lunch, Reed asks Victor to work on the code with him in exchange for Reed helping Victor out with his robots. The boys reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, Dr. Storm pulls Dr. Molekevic into his office for a meeting with General Ross. The government, who fund the Baxter Building’s research, are not happy with Molekevic’s experiments with trying to create a “walking mold in the shape of a man.” Molekevic is fired, and he leaves angrily.

Nevada, Today

Reed, Victor, and the Baxter Building’s finest are preparing to test the gigantic teleportation device. Johnny Storm takes Reed outside for a minute to let him know that the feelings Reed has for Sue are mutual; they are interrupted by the arrival of Ben Grimm, Reed’s childhood friend who has come to see the device in action. As the countdown to start the device begins, Reed and Sue embrace in a kiss. However, just as the apple being teleported disappears, Reed sees that something has gone horribly wrong…
