Reed Richards is born to two very proud parents. His scientific curiosity is evident even then, as one of his first instincts is to grab the end of his mother’s hair and examine it.

Reed’s intellectual genius has not helped out his social life. While having his head forced into a toilet at school, Reed’s best friend, Ben Grimm, comes to the rescue.

Reed and Ben arrive back at Reed’s house, where Reed is chastised by his parents for once again being the victim of bullying. When Reed’s father learns that Ben saved Reed from the bullies, he immediately warms up to his son’s friend, completely ignoring Reed.

Later that night, while having a heartfelt moment with his mother, Reed’s father bursts in the room. Reed’s tendency to take parts of household machines for his own use has resulted in one of the telephones not functioning; after yelling at his son, Reed’s father demands that everything Reed has tampered with be fixed.

The next day, Reed and Ben hang out in the garage, and after some nagging on Ben’s part, Reed agrees to explain to Ben what he’s been building in the garage. Reed believes he has found another dimension, and he intends to send some items through his home-made teleportation device to the other zone of reality.

Presumably that night, Reed causes an explosion in his room while tinkering with his project. He receives even more verbal abuse from his father.

6 Months Later

At his school’s science fair, Reed demonstrates his teleportation device by teleporting a small toy car from this dimension into the other. A government official in the crowd observes the whole experiment and calls his superiors.

This representative from the department of Mainland Technology Development visits Reed’s parents, explaining that a child with Reed’s intellect would benefit by working with others like him, at a special government-funded school. An eavesdropping Reed looks quite happy at this prospect.

Reed arrives to his new home, the Baxter Building, where he is greeted by Dr. Storm, the man who will be overseeing Reed’s personal projects. Reed is also introduced to the doctor’s oldest child, his daughter Sue, and his younger son Johnny.

The doctor explains his own findings concerning the dimension Reed has been theorizing about, called the N-Zone. Reed and the doctor walk into a room, which contains a gigantic version of Reed’s teleportation device. The doctor shows Reed three toy vehicles that have recently come through the teleportation field, objects that Reed himself sent through the zone via his own home-made device. Needless to say, Reed is amazed…
