A new villain, the Ringer, appears, locked in battle with Spider-Man. The villain’s “gimmick” is a gun that shoots metal hoops, and he’s got Spider-Man partly wrapped. As he brags about being from Maryland, a woman in a yellow and green costume drifts to the ground behind him. It’s Kitty Pryde in a new outfit. She punches the villain, then phases through the hoops he shoots at her. She tries to fry his equipment, but finds no engines or power sources. She breaks off her attack and turns to Spider-Man, phasing him so that he can walk through the hoops (as well as his shirt). Spider-Man then webs up the villain. Kitty locates a wallet in the villain’s costume and reveals his identity as Anthony Davis, from Ohio. She and Spider-Man retreat as the cops arrive on the scene.

Kitty and Peter swing off to his house, discussing a name for Kitty’s new persona. They also talk about the possibility of Peter telling his aunt that he’s Spider-Man, but Peter’s not ready for that yet. The X-jet arrives for Kitty; it’s flying on remote control, she tells Peter, because her teammates are tired of making the trip to Queens from Westchester to pick her up. Kitty floats up to the jet, and spends her trip home alternating between happiness over the afternoon’s events, and worry that she’ll scare Peter off.

The Xavier School seems empty as Kitty walks in. The first person she sees is Logan, who promptly attacks her with a knife. She phases through and dodges an electrical charge he throws at her. She next encounters Ororo, who also attacks her. Fleeing both of them, Kitty accidentally phases through the communications systems, shorting them out. She presses the button to activate the X-jet, but is captured and knocked out before she can escape.

At Peter’s house, Aunt May is preparing for a night out; she’s wearing an outfit that suggests she has a date. As she drives away, Peter notices the Blackbird hovering over the neighborhood. He swings up to it; the door opens, and when he climbs inside, closes while the jet takes off toward the school. Peter leaves the jet and is met by Kitty – who promptly zaps him with an electrical bolt, rendering him unconscious. Kitty’s face suddenly changes into someone else’s. In the last panel, we see a crew of cyborgs, led by a man in a red and black outfit.
