As the issue opens, we see Peter in school, moving from class to the cafeteria and then to the library. He is surrounded by snippets of conversations. After school, however, he’s in costume and swinging across New York City. In a room of the local police station, Captain Jean DeWolfe and a detective discuss whether Moon Knight is a real menace or just some guy in a costume, when Spider-man appears at the window. The detective draws a gun and fires. DeWolfe hurries to the roof and apologizes to Spider-man about the shooting. Spider-man has come to ask for advice about the idea of going after Hammerhead on the Kingpin’s suggestion. He really wants to just give DeWolfe the information and let her track Hammerhead down. DeWolfe stuns him by saying that she thinks he should go after Hammerhead himself. DeWolfe tells him that Hammerhead would have to be caught red-handed for charges to stick, and that he still isn’t likely to go to jail. Spider-man is outside the law, however. Their conversation is interrupted by a call to DeWolfe’s phone. She tells Spider-man that there’s a disturbance in Chinatown that he might want to investigate.
Seven minutes previously, Danny Rand has entered Chinatown and met with another man named Shang-Chi. After greeting one another, they talk over a meal. There are three gangs in Chinatown, fighting each other for no good reason, and Shang-Chi is determined to fight them until the gangs leave. The meal and conversation are halted as Hammerhead and a group of men enter the restaurant. Hammerhead confronts Shang-Chi; because of him, the gangs in Chinatown haven’t been paying their dues to the Kingpin. Hammerhead shoots Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi sits up a moment later; he has caught the bullet in his fist. A moment later Hammerhead crashes backwards through the restaurant’s window. Shang-Chi and Danny Rand face off against the men who followed Hammerhead into the restaurant; Hammerhead announces there is now a $50,000 reward for killing Shang-Chi. The two men hold their own against the gang members, throwing kicks, punches and people. The fight continues for several pages until Hammerhead gets a clear shot at Shang-Chi. Spider-man swings in and punches Hammerhead before he can pull the trigger. Unfortunately, it’s like punching a brick wall, even for Spider-man, and Hammerhead recovers enough to grab Spider-man and hold a gun to his head.
A moment later, Hammerhead is confronted a woman in a black body-suit and long silver hair. The Black Cat has come to Spider-man’s rescue.
