Seeing Johnny Storm on fire and not realizing that he is perfectly all right, Liz and the other students at the bonfire freak out and run. Peter and MJ are the only ones left. Johnny apologizes for scaring everyone, and asks them to tell Liz he didn't mean to scare her. Then he flies off. At the Baxter Building, Sue notices that Johnny has come home, but he doesn't want to talk about why he's back early.

On Monday, Liz doesn't want to go into school, but MJ talks her into it. Some of the other students start teasing her about Johnny. After school, Peter and MJ see Johnny in the parking lot. He asks about Liz; she had gone home early because of the hassling in the halls. Peter and MJ start asking Johnny about himself, but he tells them he can't talk about it. MJ tells him that even though he's not a mutant, Liz probably won't talk to him again because she "has issues" with people who have powers. Johnny asks Peter and MJ to give Liz a message that he'll be at Andru Park at five o'clock if she decides she's still speaking to him. Then he drives off.

MJ convinces Peter to put on the Spider-Man costume and go talk to Johnny. At quarter after five, Liz still hasn't shown up, but Spider-Man does. He and Johnny talk about what it's like to have powers and not be able to live a normal life. Suddenly they hear an explosion. Spider-Man goes swinging off to help; Johnny hangs his jacket up on a post in a nearby playground and bursts into flames. He follows Spider-Man to a burning building, where both set about rescuing victims. Johnny draws much of the fire up into his own body and then shoots it away into the air.

Later, Spider-Man finds him again. They start talking about costumes and helping people, but the police arrive and both heroes run for it. Johnny is angry about losing his jacket. He and Spider-Man talk about people not appreciating what heroes do for them, but both know they'll keep helping people anyway. Johnny tells Spider-Man to look him up after the Fantastic Four go public, and flies off.
