Peter Parker and Dr. Curt Conners are facing the monster Carnage. Peter asks Conners what the monster does and how it kills people, but Conners doesn’t know. As they watch, Carnage’s face changes and it begins to resemble Peter. It tries to speak, and Peter backs away. Then a tendril of red shoots towards him, but misses. As Peter moves in to fight Carnage, he tells Conners to go back to his lab and come up with a way to kill the monster.
Peter grabs Carnage and drags it up onto a roof. They grapple as Peter blames himself for this whole mess—he had said yes to Conners’ request to experiment on his DNA. Peter and Carnage crash onto two separate roofs, and the monster takes off. Some distance away, two police officers are walking to their car when Carnage lands on the roof. Spider-Man lands on top of it, and it throws him into another car. The police open fire on the monster; it attacks and drains them. A moment later, it takes on the full-body form of Peter Parker.
Conners rushes into his lab and finds Peter standing there. Peter tells him the battle is over and Carnage is finished. The action flashes back to the past; Peter realized Carnage needed to attack him to repair its own unstable DNA. When Peter looked at it again, it's face resembled his father’s. Peter again grabbed the tendrils and dragged Carnage along over the roofs. He fought his way to the top of a smokestack and leaped over the edge, where he stuck to the inside. When Carnage came after him, he hit it until it lost its grip and fell into the fire below. As it disintegrated, it made a last grab at Peter, and then disappeared, dissolved. Peter crawled out of the smokestack and headed for Conners’ lab.
In the present, Peter is about to punch Conners, but changes his mind. A little later Conners goes to the police station and turns himself in, claiming to have accidentally killed Carnage’s victims.
The next morning, Mary Jane Watson comes into the living room to see how Peter is doing. He’s filthy and tired, but he tells her that he found and stopped the person who killed Gwen and the others. MJ says he should have woken her up and she would have gotten his costume for him, but Peter tells her he’s not putting the costume on again. He’s done being Spider-Man.
At Empire State University, Ben Reilly comes to work and discovers the administration is closing the lab. Conners is in custody, and Reilly is out of a job. He asks to get his stuff. While alone in the lab, he slips a test tube of Peter’s DNA sample into his pocket and walks away.
