Powers: Nightcrawler possesses the ability to teleport. He also has a prehensile tail that acts as an extra limb, giving him extrodinary acrobatic abilities.
History: Kurt Wagner grew up in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps and was part of a travelling circus. he was captured and forced into service by Weapon X, a division of S.H.I.E.L.D. that turns mutants into living weapons for the benefit of the government. Not much more of Nightcrawler's past is known.
His stay with Weapon X lasted months, but in that short time Nightcrawler was tortured and experimented on. His chance to escape came, and Kurt made a run for it. He got as far outside the Finland Weapon X compound as he could, all the while in hot pursuit by the compound's guards. However, after attempting to teleport while riding a snowmobile Kurt was rendered defenseless and recaptured by Weapon X. On his next mission Kurt was forced to accompanied Sabretooth, Rogue, and Juggernaut to The Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters in order to capture the X-Men for the Weapon X program. The team was successful, and the X-Men were incarcerated along with Nightcrawler and his fellow detainees.
Nightcrawler shared a cell with Cyclops and Marvel Girl during their time there, and for the first time in months someone made an attempt to communicate with him. Using her telepathic abilities, Jean bridged the language barrier between Kurt and herself, allowing them to speak on the astral plane, and inform Kurt of the X-Men's plan to escape. The plan was never enacted though, as all the Weapon X mutants were rescued by some unlikely allies -- The Brotherhood of Mutants!
Before they could escape, however, they were confronted by an army of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Just as the mutants were preparing to attack, the agents were called off by Colonel Nick Fury, and the battle was averted. At the same time, Weapon X director Colonel John Wraith was attempting to escape by helicopter, for fear that the mutants may want to exact revenge. Storm, angered by what had been done to Hank McCoy, AKA The Beast, used her weather manipulating abilities to strike down the helicopter with a bolt of lightning. Kurt took action, and teleported into the helicopter, and promptly teleported out with Wraith in hand.
After the entire ordeal, Nightcrawler was offered a home with the X-Men, but refused the invitation, and instead chose to return home to Bavaria.
