Powers: The Beast has enhanced strength, speed, and endurance. He possesses the agility of an ape and the acrobatic prowess of an accomplished circus aerialist. His manual and pedal dexterity are so great he can write with both hands at once and tie knots with his toes. Hank was mutated further by the Weapon X program which granted him animal senses, claws, and caused him to grow a thick coat of indigo fur all over his body.
History: At birth Henry McCoy's only visible mutation were his oversized feet and hands and ape-like appearance. It was still enough to generate hate in the humans around him. Hank fled his home and his mutant-hating parents and eventually found his way to a New York. At a local bar he witnessed the televised death of the first victims of the Sentinel program. A few bar parons noticed Hank's ape-like feet and hands and instigated a fight. After pummeling an antagonist he left the bar and ran headlong into Jean Grey, who invited him to join Charles Xavier's fledging X-Men.
On their second mission the X-Men traveled to Croatia to rescue the daughter of the President of the United States from The Brotherhood. An explosion caused a building to collapse on The Beast, gravely injuring him. The X-Men returned home to the Institute where the Professor and Jean Grey performed an experimental transplant procedure which involved implanting Kangaroo and Gorilla organs into his body. The process was an astonishing success, and had only one side effect: turning every hair on Hank's body blue. Fortunately, Hank was strong enough to help clear civilians out of Washington, D.C. during the Sentinel's siege on the city.
Hank fully recovered and formed a relationship with his teammate Storm. During the attack on the mansion Henry was taken hostage along with the other X-Men and forced into the Weapon X program. While attempting to augment Beasts powers, Weapon X inadvertedly caused him to grow blue fur all over his body. The process also gave him claws and heightened senses. After being freed from his cell by The Brotherhood, Hank went hunting through the compound in search of Dr. Cornelius, the scientist responsible for his horrible mutantion. Upon finding him, Hank saw that Cornelius was holding the body of Professor Xavier, who had been shot by Colonel Wraith. Overcoming his intense anger and hatred, Hank helped the doctor remove the bullets from Xavier's chest, thus saving the Professor's life, and preserving Hank's sense of humanity.
The Beast traveled to Scotland along side the X-Men in order to stop Professor Xavier's deranged son, David, who tried to break Hank's dedication to Xavier's dream. David offered Hank a world in which he wasn't a blue freak, but adored by the girls of his home town... if only he would kill his teammates. David also revealed that Hank's relationship with Ororo was a farce, and that the professor was manipulating Storm into caring for Hank in order to keep Hank on the team. Whether or not this is true has never been revealed.
Faced with uncertainly due to David Xavier's accusations, Beast decided to end his relationship with Storm. This, combined with the grief he felt over the injury of his teammate, Iceman, caused Hank to turn to the internet for comfort. There he met "Naomi", a beautiful model who claimed to be infatuated with Beast's personality and appearance. Little did Hank know that "Naomi" was, in fact, The Blob, the obese member of The Brotherhood of Mutants. Blob took advantage of Hank's insecure and needy state. His guard now down, Hank made a grave mistake: inadvertedly revealing the X-Men's greatest secret to their greatest enemy... that Magneto was still alive.
Shunned by Ororo because of his mistake, Hank was feeling particularly distant from the group during their time hiding from the Government. Ororo eventually confronted Hank, and the two patched up their relationship.
After the defeat of Magneto, Xavier hosted a Parents Night at the Xavier Institute. Surprisingly enough two of the attendees were Mr. and Mrs. McCoy, fresh out of plastic surgery, using money from a book they had written about raising a mutant superhero. The two apologized for running Hank out of their home, and professed that they had left their bigoted mindsets behind, opting for new liberal and open-minded beliefs. This gave Hank the perfect opportunity to introduce his African-American girlfriend, Storm, to the two.
In another show of his love of the internet, Hank revealed to an online X-Men fansite that there was a mutant with angelic wings protruding from his back. This led to hundreds of protestors showing up outside of the mansion demanding the Angel be exposed.
